The allowance in plain English
One standard bag up to 118 cm in total (for example 55 x 40 x 23 cm) plus a small personal item.
* Air New Zealand allows a small personal item that must fit under the seat in front, without publishing a size. We use 40 x 30 x 15 cm as a conservative target.
If the bag fails the check
Seat-only fares on some routes exclude a checked bag, so anything that fails the cabin check becomes a paid checked bag at the airport rate.
Packing tips for Air New Zealand
- The 55 x 40 x 23 cm limit is wider than Australian domestic rules: a 40 cm-wide bag fits Air NZ but not Jetstar.
- If you connect onto Jetstar or Rex, pack for the smaller bag.
- Duty-free bought after security still counts towards your 7 kg on some connections.
Rules last checked October 2026 against Air New Zealand's own baggage page. Fare type, route and status can change your allowance, so confirm in your booking.

Close to the limit: check before you fly
Air New Zealand publishes no exact personal-item size. These bags are inside the largest size any Australian airline publishes (45 x 33 x 20 cm) and often pass, but they are bigger than our safe target.
