The allowance in plain English
Economy, per standard bag. Business gets 10 kg.
* Qantas allows a small personal item that must fit under the seat in front, without publishing a size. We use 40 x 30 x 15 cm as a conservative target.
If the bag fails the check
Over-limit bags are tagged and moved to the hold at the gate. On domestic Economy, carry-on that fails the check is checked in free when you have a checked allowance, otherwise excess fees can apply.
Packing tips for Qantas
- A 56 x 36 x 23 cm spinner is the safest single purchase for Qantas domestic and international.
- QantasLink Dash 8 services allow one 7 kg bag up to 105 cm in total, so a soft 48 x 34 x 23 cm bag is wiser for regional hops.
- A garment bag counts towards the same 7 kg total, it is not a free extra.
Rules last checked October 2026 against Qantas's own baggage page. Fare type, route and status can change your allowance, so confirm in your booking.

Close to the limit: check before you fly
Qantas publishes no exact personal-item size. These bags are inside the largest size any Australian airline publishes (45 x 33 x 20 cm) and often pass, but they are bigger than our safe target.
